Are you brand new to paddlesports and want to get the basics of paddling down before you head out on your own? Do you just want to enhance your kayaking skills? We offer paddlesports lessons!

Rocktown Adventures wants to help you enjoy your time outdoors on the water, no matter your current paddling experience. Learn how to safely and efficiently operate a Kayak, Canoe or Stand-Up Paddleboard, while you also make new friends. All of our paddlesports lessons include the boat, paddle, PFD (life jacket) and a “tour element” (time to paddle for fun and practice what you learned). We also offer private paddlesports lessons.

Intro to Kayaking – Beginner Level (3 Hours)

This lesson is designed as a brief introduction to paddling a kayak. If you’ve never been kayaking before, or have rented a kayak and want to learn more, this class is the perfect opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skill for your next outdoor adventure.

What You will Learn:

  • How to dress & paddle safely
  • Potential paddling hazards
  • Simple rescue techniques
  • How to enter & exit a kayak
  • Basic paddling strokes & maneuvers

Participants Must Be Able to:

  • Hold breath under water while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
  • Independently turn from a face down, to a face up position, keeping their head above water
  • Effectively communicate with the instructor and other participants
  • Manage all mobility and personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion

Kayak Balance, Bracing & Stroke Refinement – Intermediate Level (3 Hours)

Prerequisites: Introduction to Kayaking or equivalent course

This lesson is designed for paddlers of all skill levels. We will be going over bracing (avoiding capsize), proper body position, blade angels and various ways to efficiently maneuver a kayak – all with the goal of using minimal effort! This lesson is perfect for both beginner and intermediate paddlers from all kayak disciplines.

After going through the content, the instructor will film you and go over the footage with you in person. Dial in your technique to get one step closer to achieving the goal of effective boat control. This lesson will emphasize effective technique, safe boat control and to promote building of proper body position through muscle memory.

  • Effectively communicate with the instructor and other participants
  • Manage all mobility and personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion

Kayak Safety & Rescue – Beginner/Intermediate Level (3 Hours)

You’re out for a paddle on a lake and you see a shinny thing passing under the kayak. As you lean over to look…WHOOPS! Now what? The Kayak Safety & Rescue lesson introduces essential flat-water safety practices and rescue techniques that can be performed with a minimum of equipment, in the first few minutes of an outdoor incident. Learn and practice both solo and team rescue procedures for ALL types of kayaks.

Personal Equipment Required: An appropriately fitted paddling PFD, protective clothing suitable for extended swims, appropriate footwear, boat, paddle and whistle. Recreational, whitewater, coastal or fishing kayaks may be used, at the instructor’s discretion.

  • How to avoid potential dangers
  • Key self-rescue skills
  • Fast, simple, low-risk rescue techniques
  • Skills to manage minor in-water incidents

Fishing Kayak Paddling & Safety – Beginner/ Intermediate Level (3 Hours)

Course Prerequisites: None, but Intro to Kayaking is recommended

Have you found yourself fishing from the banks of a river or shores of a lake, wishing you could access that honey hole? If so, then a fishing kayak may just be the answer for you. Don’t worry if you are new to paddling, as this class will teach you how to effectively paddle a fishing kayak. There is more to paddling a kayak then simply putting a paddle blade in the water and pulling it back. Learn how to paddle and control a fishing kayak to help you with the one thing we all want…to catch more fish!

What You will Learn:

  • Basics of efficient paddling & draws
  • How to anchor your kayak in rivers
  • How to self-rescue
  • Rivers vs. lakes and how to negotiate
  • Tips for maneuvering your kayak while in the heat of battle

Participants Must Be Able to:

  • Hold breath under water while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
  • Independently turn from a face down, to a face up position, keeping their head above water
  • Effectively communicate with the instructor and other participants
  • Manage all mobility and personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion

Intro to Stand-Up Paddleboarding – Beginner Level (2 Hours)

As the fastest growing paddle sport in the world, Stand-Up Paddle Boarding is a great full-body workout and a great way to experience outdoor time on the water. People of all ages and skill levels can quickly be on their feet and paddling in no time.

What You will Learn:

  • Basics of SUP equipment
  • How to transport an SUP
  • How to properly stand up on your board
  • Paddle strokes
  • How to get back on when you fall (or jump) off the board

Participants Must Be Able to:

  • Hold breath under water while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
  • Independently turn from a face down, to a face up position, keeping their head above water
  • Effectively communicate with the instructor and other participants
  • Manage all mobility and personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion

Stand-Up Paddleboarding Yoga – Beginner Level (2 Hours)

Prerequisites: None, but prior SUP experience is recommended.

This class will start with an overview of SUP & Yoga Flow on land. Then we will head outdoors to the water for a yoga sequence that will incorporate multiple poses, such as hero, child, downward dog and warrior – to name a few. The last 20-30 minutes is for you to explore stand-up paddle boarding.

Dress to get wet and avoid wearing cotton, if you can, as it retains water when wet. A rash guard/poly blend material shirt is recommended. Other items you will want to have: water, sunblock and a towel.

While there is no pre-requisite for this class, pleased be advised you should have been on a paddle board before coming to class.
