2020 Pre-Season Winter Sale

Rocktown Adventures | 2020 Pre-Season Winter Sale

Are you feeling a little stressed these days?

During this pandemic environment, one thing we have for recreation and entertainment is the outdoors. This past summer, we witnessed an increased demand for outdoor recreation equipment and we’re expecting to see some of that carry through into the winter. Thus, our Pre-Season Winter Sale!

Not only do the outdoors provide recreation, but it also provides an opportunity to improve your health. Exposure to trees has shown an ability to decrease stress levels…and who couldn’t use a little stress relief? In addition, that yellow ball in the sky (though, we don’t see a TON of it during the winter) is also good for you. In fact, one thing the medical community did to combat the Spanish Flu of 1918 was put beds outside, so patients could absorb Vitamin D from the sun. However, regardless of the pandemic environment, it is always good to get outdoors!

If you want to Gear Up & Head Out this winter – and why would you not, with all there is to do outdoors – then you want to visit Rocktown Adventures during our Pre-Season Winter Sale, going on from November 12-15, 2020. Take advantage of great deals that will help you to enjoy the winter weather!

Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. We can help you with that as on land, water, or snow, Rocktown Adventures has you covered from head to toe. Stop by our location in Rockford, IL from November 12-15, 2020 for deals on premium outdoor gear and apparel to help you enjoy a Midwest winter.

Cold-Weather Paddling Apparel

The shadows are getting a little longer & the sun is sitting lower on the horizon

This means one thing…Fall is near!

Do not despair as we look at summer in the rearview mirror. If you ask us at Rocktown Adventures, fall is the best time of year to paddle. The lack of other recreational opportunities due to the current pandemic means the outdoors are beckoning, so extend your paddling season into late fall by dressing in the appropriate paddling apparel! As we enter the fall paddling season, please keep in mind the importance to dress for the water temperature – not the air temperature. That late October gift of a 65-degree day can give you a false sense that it is warm or safe enough outdoors to “take a swim. However by then, the water temperatures will likely be in the 50s.

Rocktown Adventures | Outdoor Paddling Apparel
Rocktown Adventures | Outdoor Paddling Apparel

REMEMBER: Below 120-degrees, combined air and water temperature, precautions need to be made in regard to what you wear while paddling.

Avoid cotton, as it retains water and does not insulate. Waterproof shoes and/or booties will let you keep some wool socks on your feet. For your outerwear needs, we like to keep it simple and layer with the NRS Hydroskin Jacket, and NRS Hydroskin Pants over the top. As an extra precaution, we suggest at least one paddler carry a heat blanket. It is also a good idea to pack a change of dry clothes in a dry bag, if you will be on the water for an extended period of time.

Other options available for paddlers, for more robust protection in extreme conditions, are splash tops/pants or even a full-body Paddling Suitwith gloves and a Splash Top, to keep your exposed top-half toasty when conditions call for such measures. Whatever the outdoor conditions, as long as there is open water, there is paddling apparel to help you paddle it. Good, protective outerwear that performs effectively is not inexpensive. However, your safety is worth it!

We have many opportunities for you to Gear Up & Head Out on the water this fall, from the Fox to the Rock, and a few other rivers in-between! Our Rocktown Adventures group outings include all of the equipment you need, a refresher on paddling strokes & safety with experienced guides, a relaxed social setting for you to meet like-minded people and the opportunity to take on new challenges and outdoor adventures.

If you would like to join us on a fall paddle, please visit https://rocktownadventures.com/2021-fall-paddling-series/ for more info on dates and time. We monitor weather conditions and require all participants to be properly protected from the elements, should conditions dictate.

Please give us a call at (815) 636-9066 or drop by the store in Rockford, IL if you have any questions about Fall paddling. Still a lot of time left in paddle season and plenty of time to experience the outdoors on the water. We hope to see you on an adventure this Fall!

2020 Fall Color Paddle Series

Rocktown Adventures has many opportunities for you to Gear Up & Head Out this fall

From the Fox to the Rock and a few other rivers in between, our Fall paddle group outings include all the outdoor equipment you need, as well as a refresher on paddling strokes and safety, experienced guides, a relaxed social setting for you to meet like-minded people and the opportunity to take on new challenges and outdoor adventures.

Please keep in mind that when paddling later in the year, it is important to pay attention to the combined air and water temperature. The baseline is 120 degrees combined. If it is lower than that, always have some protective clothing on in case of immersion. It rarely happens, but it is important to be prepared for this potential occurrence. Our main concern is that when you paddle, you dress for the water temperature. If you would like to join Rocktown Adventures for a Fall paddle, we are going out on the below dates:

OCTOBER 3: SUGAR RIVER

OCTOBER 4: KISHWAUKEE RIVER

OCTOBER 11: FOX RIVER W/ KANE COUNTY FOREST PRESERVE NATURALIST

OCTOBER 19: TURTLE CREEK

Register for any of these experiences by clicking the event listing (above) or visiting our events page. Please give us a call at (815) 636-9066 or drop by the store in Rockford, IL if you have any questions about these events or anything related to Fall paddling. We will run multiple shuttles for our upcoming Fall paddle outings, to minimize personal interaction in our shuttle vehicle, so launch time will take a little longer than usual. All equipment is disinfected and cleaned prior to going out so you can be ensured of safe and clean gear.

There’s still two months left in paddle season and plenty of time to experience the outdoors on the water. We hope to see you on an adventure this Fall!

Kayak Fishing in the Dog Days of Summer

Bass Fishing in the Dog Days of Summer

By Rodney Hicks

Bass fishing in the hot summer months can be tough for most anglers, even myself. There are several things that come into play with summer bass fishing; things like elevated water temperatures, offshore transitions, selection of lure choice and many more amalgamations.

I personally like to downsize my lure selection and slow way down, and when I say way down – slow as you can go, literally. Bass are lethargic this time of the year. Using a finesse presentation can be key to putting more fish in the net. My go-to presentation to finesse bass into the net has been the popular Ned Rig. The key for me, is using light tackle meaning a medium action rod paired with a spinning reel spoiled with 10lb braid and 8lb test fluorocarbon leader. Using this combination is super important because having the no-stretch braid gives you extreme sensitivity to feel the lightest taps. Also, when paired with fluorocarbon it gives you a stealthy approach, meaning decreased line visibility.

Like I mentioned above, the “Ned Rig” is my lure of choice. I use Zman TRDs paired with Zman bullet hooks. Zman bullet hooks have several different weights that will cover all depths of the water column, but I usually go with the lightest weight I can get away with. As an added benefit, they are designed to be weed less, so fishing around vegetation is not an obstacle.

I catch everything from smallmouth to largemouth bass and many more species of fish for that matter using this technique. Overall downsizing your lure choice and tackle can lead to more bass on your line! Go small on your next outing and see for yourself!

Summertime Fishing

By Titus Dominquez

Summer is probably my favorite time of the year to fish. The hot weather and stable conditions make for great mornings or evenings on the kayak. For me the summer pattern means one thing – weed lines. I spend most of my trips during the hot days of summer patrolling the deeper weed edges of my local lakes.

My go-to bait of the summer is the Senko. I usually throw it on a wacky rig, or if I am fishing in a little bit thicker weeds, I’ll rig it weedless on a belly weighted EWG hook. It’s simple and subtle profile will produce bites on the even the most pressured lakes. I’ll use that presentation to quickly find where the fish are tucked in to avoid the heat. Typically I’ll find the best fish on weed lines that are in 6-10 feet of water. The combination of depth and cover gives big fish a place to hunt and hide. Once I have located the best pockets in the weed lines, I’ll fish the whole water column. I’ll work the surface with a frog, the middle with a swimjig or a chatterbait, and the bottom with a Texas rigged creature bait or worm.

I hope that this quick info can help you dial in your lake, and land more fish during the summer. The time is ripe for some fun on the water so get out while you can in my favorite part of the season!

2020 Outdoor Gear Yard Sale

April 18th, 2020 | 10am – 2pm @ Rocktown Adventures

Our inaugural event was SO successful, we’re coming back with our 2nd Annual Outdoor Gear Yard Sale!

Do you have some outdoor gear taking up space in your garage or shed? Would you like to turn some used outdoor gear into cash or see if you can swap your old gear for someone else’s? Are you looking to get outside more but do not want to purchase new equipment? Or, maybe you just want to get rid of some outdoor gear in general? If you answered yes to any of these, you will want to come to Rocktown Adventures during our 2020 Outdoor Gear Yard Sale going on April 18th from 10AM – 2PM. Come to sell or come to purchase. Even come to donate! All are welcome!

Rocktown Adventures | Outdoor Gear Yard Sale

Vendor Tables

We will have a limited number (12–14) of 6-foot tables available for people to sell their outdoor gear.  There is no fee to reserve a table, but we do ask for a donation of at least one non-perishable food item. All donated foods will benefit the Cornucopia Food Pantry located in downtown Rockford. Tables are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve your table, please send an email to info@rocktownadventures.com. You will receive an email confirming your table space. No commercial businesses are allowed to have a vendor table at this time. If Mother Nature does not cooperate, we will move vendors into our warehouse next door to our store.

All registered vendors will be required to fill out a liability form before set up. As a thank you for coming out, all vendors will receive a 25% off for any regular priced apparel, camping or hiking purchases.

Outdoor Gear Donation Box

In addition to the vendor tables, we will have a donation box for outdoor gear – kind of like a hiker’s box along the Appalachian Trail. Donate any items to the box, which is open to anyone free of charge to grab what they like. Limit of two items per person claimed from the Outdoor Gear Box, please. The Outdoor Gear Box is open for donations (and liquidations!) year-round. We stage this in front of the checkout area in the store.

Permissible Items to Sell

Any sporting goods equipment is permitted. Camping gear, tents, backpacks, kayaks, canoes, paddling gear, fishing gear, used but in good condition clothes or shoes, winter sports equipment, bikes or team sports are welcomed. Guns, ammunition and archery equipment are prohibited.

Hours of Operation

The Yard Sale will run from 10AM – 2PM. Set up will begin at 9AM. You are not required to stay for the duration of the event. Sell your outdoor gear and take off or come into the store to take advantage of our Yard Sale items.

Outdoor Gear Yard Sale | Oboz

Earth Day at Rocktown

In addition to the Yard Sale, where people can set up tables free of charge and sell their gear to the public or swap it with someone else, our hiking shoe vendor, Oboz, is adding to the fun. Their standard practice is to plant a tree for every pair of shoes sold, and they are over 1,000,000 trees planted! For Earth Day Weekend, April 18th & 19th, all you need to do is simply try on a pair of Oboz hiking shoes, and Oboz will plant a tree for you. You walk away with a sticker commemorating your efforts to help plant a tree – which we all know is a good thing. And you get to try premium hiking shoes, most of which will be on sale this weekend!

We will not have a table in the tent, but we will have an assortment of equipment (paddling and winter sports) and apparel available at Yard Sale prices. These items will be clearly marked and located in-store. We will donate 10% of sales April 18 to Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful to assist them in their mission to improve our environment through education, public awareness and community involvement. Do your duty in celebration of Earth Day then come over to Rocktown Adventures! Hope to see you on April 18th!

Lessons: Kayak Fishing 101

Rocktown Adventures | Kayak Fishing 101

If you have Gone Fishing from shore but are looking for more, a kayak may be what you are looking for…

Thinking about taking a dive into Kayak Fishing? Are you leery of making the beginner mistakes? Having a hard time finding dependable kayak fishing lessons and information to help get you started? Then you will want to join us and the Rocktown Adventures Kayak Fishing Team on Saturday, March 7, 2020 for our FREE In-Store “Kayak Fishing 101” Lesson/Seminar!

Yes, Rocktown Adventures has started a Kayak Fishing Team. Not so much to focus on competitive events – although all four our team members have spent hours upon hours grinding it out in tournaments and we support them in these endeavors – but rather, to focus on providing you with a reliable, knowledgeable and hopefully humorous resource for kayak fishing and to encourage others to “Get off the Shore!”

At the end of the day, we all want the same thing: people spending more time outdoors, creating repeatable and memorable experiences. We are happy to have Brian Schiller, Titus Dominguez, Jason Paszkowsi and Rodney Hicks as part of the Rocktown Adventures family. Read below, about how and why they started kayak fishing.

Brian Schiller | Rocktown Adventures Team Member
Brian Schiller

I am a long time fisherman who decided to enter the kayak fishing world, and take it all on head first. I’m a tournament angler and the creator of the Paddle n Fin podcast. Love everything outdoors, but paddling/pedaling a plastic boat in search of giant fish is my true passion.

Titus Dominguez | Rocktown Adventures Team Member
Titus Dominguez

When I finally got the storage space for one, I bought a kayak. I’ve spent the last few years sharpening my skills fishing the Kayak Bass League tournament trail and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with those just starting out. For me there is nothing like kayak fishing, and nothing better than a day on the water.

Jason Paszkowski | Rocktown Adventures Team Member
Jason Paszkowski

I’ve been fishing since I could walk. I am an adventurist and adrenaline junkie by nature. I got into kayak fishing in 2017 to access spots where big boats could not and I liked white water rafting.

You know how people say they feel the closet to god when  at church on Sunday?….Well I feel closest to god, nature and the universe when I’m on the water in my kayak – not just on Sunday’s either. I am a career Firefighter/Paramedic with Chicago and part-time with Lyons Fire. That time fishing and searching for that big bass or big northern is my way to decompress from it all. Come to a kayak bass fishing tournament and see what our culture is all about and why this is not only the best, but one of the fastest growing sports in the world. I am proud to be a part of Rocktown and the kayak fishing community.

Rodney Hicks | Rocktown Adventures Kayak Fishing Team Member
Rodney Hicks

At the time of this publication, Rodney was too busy working! Therefore, we are taking the opportunity to introduce him ourselves. Rodney has been an avid tournament angler and ambassador of Kayak Fishing for a number of years. Traveling all over the Midwest, he has seen what a great community there is surrounding Kayak Fishing and he hopes to inspire you to join in the fun!

Back to the details on the seminar!

Over the course of 90-minutes and a few laughs trading war stories, you will learn some tips on how to Gear Up & Head Out.

1. How to choose the best kayak & gear for your needs
2. Practical outfitting options for your kayak & knowledge on the best way to do it to fit your needs
3. Tips on local kayak fishing areas, paddling techniques & tactics

While Kayak Fishing 101 is a FREE In-Store lesson, it always helps to have an idea for head count. Please sign up online, give us a call at (815) 636-9066 or stop by the store in Rockford, IL to register. Beverages will be available on site.
